‘8’ follows the story of Don Venero Leale of the Leale crime family, who rejects and punishes his eldest son, Ed, for dedicating his time to designing steampunk airships rather than loyalty to his family.
He favours his younger son, Valentin to be the next head of the family, prompting Ed to run away to America to start a new and fulfil his dreams.
But his freedom is short lived.
Valentin secretly follows him across and tracks him down, determined to prove himself as future Don. Both descend into a heated conflict which sees Valentin accidentally killed by Ed.
Ed rebuilds his dead brother as an automation ‘Otto’, and goes on to construct his own mafia of other robots and opens a steampunk speakeasy, raking in corrupt profits to fund the construction of an actual airship.
Both brothers fall in love with a down and out singer, Marley, and old tensions begin to resurface, leading Ed on a downward spiral to be worse than his family ever were...
